Note: Capt. Joseph Newcomb resided in Edgartown. He was elected a Selectman in 1712, moderator, town treasurer, Rep. to the General Court in 1721, and sealer of weights and measures. Before 1722 he was known as Captain, afterward referred to as Gentleman. They moved to Salem (Fairfield) now Cumberland, N.J. in 1732, and he d. soon after. His widow Joyce was appointed admx. 17 Jan. 1733. in New Jersey, also son Bayes who remained in Edgartown. Both are buried at New England Cross Roads (Fairfield), N.J. They had six children, Bayes, b. 1708, [BO:Priscilla :BO]b. 1711, Joyce b. 1712, twins Joseph and William b. Sept. 17, 1718, and Silas, b. abt. 1723, who became a distinguished officer in the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in 1777.
