      Text: ix. ELIZABETH, b. about 1681, d. after 1743; m. 5 Mar. 1699-1700, Capt.
      John Atkins, b. 6 Aug. 1674, at Eastham, Mass., d. Sept. 1733 or 30
      Jan. 1732-3, son of Henry and Bethiah (Linnell). They lived a few
      years at Eastham, removing to a farm at Chatham, Mass.,where he
      was active in local affairs, being selectman five years, treasurer two
      years, etc.; Lieut. in Militia under Capt. Ebenezer Hawes in1715;
      appointed Capt. 1720. He was one of the first seven members of the
      church, organized 1720, and was prominent in controversies which
      arose between Rev. Hugh Adams and Rev. Samuel Osborne, the
      Eastham minister. In his will, dated 10 Jan. 1732-3, he mentions
      Emlin, his brother Samuel's wife; no children or grandchildren are
      mentioned. His widow was living as late as 29 Mar. 1743, when she
      joined with her sister Emlin and husband in conveying by deed to their
      nephew, Bayes4 Newcomb, "all our land in Edgartown," which they
      had doubtless inherited from their parents.
